Apparently, online board game tournaments would create significant added value for the game. Since I have no experience with such tournaments myself, we could discuss the topics of these tournaments a little here (do a proper analysis before starting to implement them :)). As a comment, I would like to say that tournaments would then take place in all different games: Brazilian checkers tournament, surrender tournament, chess tournament, rendzu tournament, etc. At first glance, I will divide the topic of tournaments as follows: 1) Tournament format There are apparently several options here: a) Everyone plays with everyone b) Subgroups are drawn. In the subgroups, everyone plays with everyone, the best ones qualify for the Play Offs. The Play Offs are played until two wins (maximum three games). I prefer this option. c) Same as option b, but some kind of consolation round is created to give the opportunity to still qualify for the Play Offs, etc. 2) Number of players Different games will definitely have different numbers of players in a tournament. While there is certainly no problem finding 32 players in checkers, for example, in Reversi there may be a problem finding 16 players:) 3) Registration Registration would begin after a corresponding announcement on the tournaments subpage. A separate form will be displayed to the player for registration. Registration works on the principle of - first come first served:) A certain period is given for registration - for example 4 days. During this time, it is also possible to cancel the registration - others will have the opportunity to fill the place. If the desired number of players does not register by the registration deadline, there are three options: a) The registration deadline is extended (the start of the tournament is postponed) b) The tournament format is changed (the tournament is played through with the existing players) c) the tournament is canceled. 4) Dividing into subgroups Players are divided into subgroups based on the general tournament principles: One player with a strong rating and one with a weak rating are placed in one subgroup. The remaining players are drawn into that subgroup. 5) Playing Two players are given a certain period of time when they must play a game(s) between themselves. There are several options for two players to play each other in a tournament: a) Playing in a game room. When submitting an invitation, it is announced that it is a tournament game. b) A link is displayed on the tournament page, which, when clicked, will display the game board to the user and they will wait for their opponent. I would perhaps even favor this option, because it makes it easier for the user to see who and when they have to play next. So. The first thoughts have been written down. It would probably make sense to move different sub-points to different topics, but this will probably only happen when there are enough answers/opinions in this topic. In conclusion: If anyone has any experiences/ideas/suggestions, let me know! Let's make Vinti better together :)!
Board game tournaments

Holding tournaments is definitely a good idea. I would like to point out how some issues have been resolved on the excellent bridge game site BBO (Bridge Base Online). There are certain weekly tournaments whose time does not change. Users can also organize tournaments themselves, offering them in a special tournament room, where you can see exactly which tournament is coming up when and where everyone can register (and deregister) for the tournament. If a player who has registered for a tournament is currently in another room, he will be automatically "thrown" into the tournament room when the tournament starts. Tournaments are mostly held in the Swiss system and the program will automatically form pairs and match them up, meaning the player has nothing to do but wait for the start of a new round. Of course, when it comes to tournaments, you have to take into account that you have to give time in advance for the entire game, not for the move, otherwise the entire tournament can be stuck for a very long time after 1 game.
I agree with the speaker that: 1. The tournament or tournaments should be held on specific days and times, preferably in the afternoon. 2. They should be held in the Swiss system for 11 rounds. 3. They should be held as blitz tournaments, otherwise the tournaments would be very long. 4. A separate Tournament Rating should be created, which would be separate from the regular rating system. 5. Registration for the Tournament should begin no more than 15 minutes before the start of the Tournament.
I'm also interested in this. The examples given by M00sekand in bullet points are very good :)
I didn't mean such a scoring system, because if tournaments started to be held 3 times a week it would be pretty hopeless to be able to participate there all the time!!!! And I don't think that as a so-called series tournament it would work like that. But a separate tournament rating would definitely be necessary, because every tournament there are definitely new players who then get a primary rating!! Because if this rating were all the same and there were a lot of new players, the stronger ones would lose motivation to play.
I like the conditions proposed by moosekandi, and this F1 points system is also a good idea :)
I went to meet with the people from the Estonian Checkers Association today and it was decided: 1) There will be one tournament for each game subtype - This means that one week there will be a Russian Checkers Tournament, the next the International Checkers Tournament, etc. As long as the round is full - then it will start over. Tournaments will take place during the week (it was recommended on Wednesday at 20:00 :P). 2) The tournament format will be the Swiss system or (Emperor's - spelling definitely wrong :D) system. There would be 10-11 rounds (each player would be able to play 10-11 games during the tournament). 3) The number of players participating in the tournament is unlimited 4) The tournament time is advertised a week in advance, but you can register for the tournament a maximum of two hours before the start of the tournament (this also eliminates the so-called "forgetting about the tournament") 5) The following time controls are used in the tournament: for Russian checkers 3 minutes / game ( 2 seconds) and for International checkers 5 minutes / game ( 3 seconds). 6) As a result of the previous points, one tournament lasts up to 3 hours. 7) To start the tournament, the user must go to the tournament page - he must stay on this page until the end of the tournament (the exception is internet connection interruptions). When starting the game, a game board is displayed in front of the player 8) The user will have his own rating for each game subtype (e.g., deal rating, etc.). The rating system is the board game rating system used in Vind - the user's rating is initially 1400 and points are added / removed according to the rating of the game partner. 9) All tournament games can be watched, but only players can exchange text messages during a tournament game (to avoid replays)
The number one problem with the current tournament system is that the "aces" always win. What if we had separate tournaments for players with different playing classes - there is already a natural division here: red, green, black, etc. That way, weaker players would also share the joy of winning :)
Dilbert - you can always make a closed tournament and only allow the players you want to enter. The Vint team is generally very happy that the level of our Checkers/Gomoku tournaments is so high. Vint.ee Official tournaments must be of a high level.
yes of course I can. but I suggest that the weaker ones are not interested in paid tournaments if they have absolutely no chance of winning. Or am I wrong to assume that the winners of paid tournaments don't earn anything?
