Just a comment.. My gold came with a lot of luck. I only had 11 points from yesterday's Agricola for one long section, so I played Monopoly today. 10 people came together and with the gold I improved my Pentamind score by 84 points. So I came in first place in the women's competition, 76 points ahead of the next woman, and 11th place overall. Andres didn't have all the results at hand before, but here they are: 1 Andres Kuusk 477.03 2 Matthew Hathrell 475.38 3 Tim Hebbes 447.17 4 Martin Hõbemägi 444.22 (youth gold) 5 David Jameson 444.16 6 Dario de Toffoli 442.23 7 James Heppel 440.37 8 Ankush Khandelwal 437.02 9 Tony Niccoli 409.39 10 Alain Dekker 403.39 11 Madli Mirme 396.44 (women's gold) ...

Where can I get additional information (how many participants, how many countries) to prepare a press release?
Nuffu 2014-08-26T10:50:55+03:00
There were about 340 individual participants. Pentamind counted 30. I didn't count the number of countries this time. Maybe someone else can tell. I would suggest that there were 20.

Correction: 334 individual participants

The circle of favorites described by Tiit is quite diverse :). One year the favorite is Andres, the next year Andres and then Andres again :)

A brief summary of the key moments that brought success this time. 1) Hard training ... This year's home preparation in terms of theory mainly included kamisado and it went 100% perfectly. In kamisado, the theoretical preparation of the opening is relatively difficult, since the starting position is freely selectable (analogous to the preparation in Fischer chess), but we were able to generalize from individual positions to standard patterns and find several clever ideas. Martin said that he had more than half of the games where the opponents simply walked into the traps we had prepared at home, and I also had several games. The second area where our preparation was the best was boku. We did a lot of work there last year and by this time we had forgotten a lot, but it was still a big help. It is no surprise that the good ones came in the first two places in kamisado and boku. 2) Know your opponent In a previous post, I already wrote about Ankush's clever bluff in a 5 card draw poker tournament. This can be considered my highlight of the year. Since I later won that poker tournament, without that hero call I wouldn't have had a hundred points in poker and therefore the Pentamind title. The conclusion here is that watching your opponents and remembering their moves even a year or so later can be crucial. 3) Teamwork When one and a half points are decisive, then every point counts. The Estonian team mostly participated in the same areas, helping each other to collect points based on the number of participants in the trump areas. In addition, I felt the help of the team when Madli beat Alain Dekker in the lines of action tournament and thanks to that I shared first place with Dekker. Without that, I wouldn't have had the Pentamind title again. 4) Luck favors the stronger Without good luck, I wouldn't have had this year's first place either. In the lost cities game, which helped me win gold on the last day, the ratio of skill and luck is about 50-50, so there's not much you can do without the favor of the goddess of luck. How much was involved in the card game is shown by the comparison between me and Martin - we are practically equal players and in the warm-up game held immediately before the tournament I got a pitiful scolding from him, but in the tournament Martin won only 1 game and was last, while I shared first place with 9 points out of 12. Of these 9 wins, 6-7 came purely from a good card run, so the opponents had nothing to do. If we assume that everyone is given an equal amount of good luck, then I have no intention of trying the lottery in the coming years. These were the four key moments from this year's Pentamind, all of which were necessary conditions for a golden final chord and brought with them a proud trophy and a monthly salary of one and a half. I am happy that Pentamind is once again attracting the interest of sponsors and even better times are expected in the coming years. What can we expect from next year? When I got home last night, exhausted, I had the same feeling as a year ago, that I couldn't go through this series of trials anymore. This morning, however, the emotion of victory has finally arrived, and with it the responsibility to bring an even bigger team to the next year and achieve even better results. A week of rest and the work for Pentamind 2015 begins.
