It's very easy to check. You just have to look at whether the pawns' lines of fire create an unbroken barrier or not, and then see if the spears are out.

Hm. Can you point to a specific game where adding such functionality would have been useful? I.e. bells and whistles are good, but they're useful in every ten thousandth game. Is it worth wasting time and effort on it?

Personally, I have repeatedly encountered endgames with pawn pairs blocking kings (though not in this environment, because I have played very little here). At the same time, of course, it would be a lot to say that without this feature this place here is useless or something like that. In my opinion, it does not require special effort.
