The Youth World Championships confirmed that Estonia's bright minds are more than equal to the young people from the great powers of Russia and China in renju. In Tallinn, the Youth and Junior World Championships in the "five in a row" mind games renju and gomoku took place at the TUT Student House from 7 to 13 August. 8 sets of medals were awarded in renju according to age and gender. Estonia won 2 world championship titles - Martin Hõbemägi in the junior (21-25 years old) competition and Georg-Romet Topkin among 16-20 year old young men. 2 silver medals were also achieved in the same groups - Villem Mesila and Brenet Rahumägi, respectively. Estonia won 3 bronze medals, their lucky owners were Mari Kolk among 16-20 year old girls, Markus Ikla in the tournament for boys up to 11 years old and Tauri Purk among juniors. Both China and Russia won 3 world championship titles in renju. The speed gomoku was held as a single tournament without age groups. Martin Hõbemägi won, thus also becoming the world champion in gomoku. The main organizer Ants Soosõrv specified the circumstances of the victory: “The most successful athlete of the competition is a graduate of Tallinn Science School, who has been involved in renju and gomoku since the 1st grade at Kullo Hobby Center. In addition, the versatile young man is the captain of the National Football League team, recently won a gold medal at the Estonian mental sports pentathlon pair tournament (paired with mental sports world champion Andres Kuus), and he plans to start teaching children at Kullo Hobby Center in addition to school. In the spring, Martin also became the team world champion in renju as part of the Estonian team, so his year has been particularly successful in terms of sports.” “Our second fresh world champion, Georg-Romet Topkin, who graduated from primary school at Tallinn Central School, is just as determined and talented as his armless brother Matz, who is known to be aiming for the next Paralympic Games in swimming. Georg is one of our young people, from whom we hope to add to the Estonian adult team in a couple of years,” added the main organizer. The next major youth competitions in rendžius and gomoku - the European Youth Championships - will be held in Crete in early May next year.
