Hello, the Estonian Mental Sports Association is once again organizing an online mental sports Olympiad for schools. The competitions will take place online - students can take part in the Olympiad from their school's computer class. Last year, 624 students from 57 schools participated in the competitions. List of schools that participated last year: http://www.vint.ee/?module_action=Tournaments-school_tournament_participants&year=2013&action=overall Competitions will be held in four areas: Russian checkers, chess, gomoku or five in a row and solving sudoku. There will be 4 stages during the school year and the calculation will take place in three different age groups: elementary school (1st-4th grade), basic school (5th-9th grade) and high school (10th-12th grade). The goal is to popularize mental sports among schoolchildren, so everyone is welcome to participate - even students who have never played chess/checkers before. Competition Guide: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1032cdrNHPtURAYRC-ACFpnTZP-F8vHmy-qRw-idd84g/edit?usp=sharing Organizers Estonian Mental Sports Association, Estonian Mental Sports Portal Vint.ee, Estonian Kabeliit, Estonian Chess Association, Estonian Rendžuliit, AS Kuma Schedule 29.09 - 03.10.2014 Informing schools about the tournament 03.11 - 06.11.2014 Training tournaments in all areas in the Vint.ee environment 14.11.2014 - Registration deadline for schools 24.11 - 27.11.2014 Stage I of the competition will take place Chess tournaments will take place on Monday (24.11) (There will be 3 tournaments in the Vint.ee environment - a separate tournament for all age groups) Checkers tournaments will be held on Tuesday (25.11) Gomoku tournaments will be held on Wednesday (26.11) Sudoku tournaments will be held on Thursday (27.11) Stage II of the competitions will take place from 12.01 - 15.01.2015 (tournaments will take place similarly to stage I) Stage III of the competitions will take place from 16.02 - 19.02.2015 Stage IV of the competitions will take place from 06.04 - 09.04.2015 Primary school tournaments will start at 13:00, secondary school tournaments at 13:30 and high school tournaments at 14:00. Participation in the competition It is important that each school appoints one person (principal / interest group leader / teacher) who will be the school's contact for the competition organizer, who will guide students on issues related to participating in the tournament, and who will be physically present in the school's computer classrooms during the tournaments. All schools must notify their wish to participate in the competition with a list of students to [email protected] by 14.11.2014. For each student, the following must be provided: Student's first and last name Class (so that the student can participate in the correct age group) Student's Vint.ee username Awards All sub-unions will award the three best students in all age groups with a named medal/souvenir, respectively: Estonian Chess Federation - in checkers Estonian Chess Federation - in chess Estonian Rendžu Federation - in gomoku AS Kuma - in solving Sudoku Estonian Mind Sports Federation - in the overall calculation (in determining the best mind athletes) Changes compared to last year * The three best students in each age group will be awarded a named medal/souvenir in each discipline * For the first time, the Estonian Mind Sports Federation will determine and award the best mind athletes in the overall calculation. The best of the previous academic year can be seen (view of the summary table): http://www.vint.ee/mottespordi-olumpiad/ * It is possible to be late for all tournaments by 10 minutes. In the case of the Sudoku tournament, the time of lateness is added to the time of solving the first sudoku, in other games the student will receive a zero in the tournament table for the missed rounds. * Training tournaments are held. The goals of the training tournaments: New competitors can get acquainted with the Vint.ee environment and create a Vint.ee username Students who have already participated in the competitions can remember their vint.ee usernames and passwords Students and teachers who have not yet decided whether to participate in the competitions will get a better idea of how the competitions will take place Schools can check whether it is possible to participate in the tournament in their computer class (whether the internet connection and computers are fast enough) Schools can use training tournaments to find out the best ones to allow to the Mental Sports Olympiad (if the interest of the participants in the school is too great) The organizer can check the technical readiness to conduct the tournaments. We recommend that as many students as possible take part in the training tournaments! There is no distinction between different age groups in the training tournaments - all students participate in one tournament. The results of the training tournaments do not affect participation in the Mental Sports Olympiad or its outcome in any way. The tournaments will take place as follows: 03.11 at 14:00 - Chess 04.11 at 14:00 - Checkers 05.11 at 14:00 - Gomoku 06.11 at 14:00 - Sudoku All questions are welcome [email protected] Best regards, Marten Meikop Estonian Mind Sports Association

General * More schools and students participated in Stage I than last year combined: 68 schools and 727 students! * Since the large number of players made the vint.ee tournament room unbearably slow on slower computers, the vint team will have to work hard to significantly optimize the user interface for Stage II * The agenda includes changing the instructions - the three best results would be taken into account in the overall score (instead of today's four) * 7 rounds in chess tournaments are not enough for 100 participants. The idea is to add 2 rounds and in order not to extend the total duration of the tournament, we should reduce the game time control to 7 2. Results by area Chess In primary school, Anastassia Sinitsõna from Narva Kesklinna Gymnasium won the first stage, in primary school Georg Nero from Tallinn Real School and in secondary school Georg Abozenko from Tallinn Südalinna School Russian Checkers In primary and secondary school, Triinu Jalg and Merilii Jalg from Oskar Lutsu Palamuse Gymnasium won. In secondary school, Reivo Vinter from Kuressaare Gymnasium won. Gomoku In primary school, Tallinn Real School won three times, the best was Ardi Raag. In primary school, Kuno Kolk from French Lyceum won, and in secondary school, Paul Kolk from Kuressaare Gymnasium won. Solving Sudoku In primary school, Ardi Raag from Tallinn Real School won (as in Gomoku). It seems that Gomoku and solving Sudoku have more similarities than it seems at first glance - in elementary school, the Sudoku victory went to the winner of Gomoku - Kuno Kolk from the French Lyceum. In the upper secondary school, Kalle Klaos from the Nõo Real Gymnasium won. Overall results In elementary school and elementary school, Ardi Raag from the Tallinn Real Gymnasium and Kuno Kolk from the French Lyceum lead with two wins. In upper secondary school, the Checkers victory is led by Reivo Vinter from the Kuressaare Gymnasium. All the best, Marten Meikop Estonian Mind Sports Association

It was a software error, which was fixed for the next day's checkers tournament. We have received a request from one school to change a student's result because the student lost the game due to an interruption. We are also waiting for information from other schools about which students' results were affected by this interruption. We will change the game result to a draw if the student whose move was interrupted was not already in a losing position at that moment and who lost the game (either due to the state of the game or due to the end of time). Please send complaints to [email protected] 2) There are still Sudoku solvers at the elementary school level (there were 8 of them in the third stage) who are making mistakes in the instructions and do not enter the numbers in a logical order. The results of the third stage of these students were reset. The last stage of the Olympiad this academic year will take place from 06.04 to 09.04.2015. Best wishes, Marten Meikop Estonian Mõttespordi Liit
