Hello, The Estonian Mind Sports Pairs Championship took place in Karepa over the weekend. There were five disciplines: Sudoku solving, chess, bridge, gomoku and checkers. 27 pairs competed, just like last year. Participants had also arrived from Russia and Sweden. The competition started with solving sudoku puzzles. They had to solve 14 sudoku puzzles within 45 minutes. The pair Martin Hõbemägi - Tauri Purk did their job extremely quickly, but unfortunately they had a bad day (in addition to them, several other pairs finished early) and the winners were Andres Kuusk-Ain Salula, who acted more balancedly, in 14 minutes and 11 seconds. Second place was taken by Timo Ilu – Margus Tuvikene with 20min and 20 seconds, and third place was taken by Andrus Möller – Jaan Oskar Narva with a time of 36:52. In another area, the 7-round chess tournament with a time control of 10min 3 sec, Kuusk-Salula won first place with as many as 13 points out of 14 possible. Second place was taken by the Russian pair Georgi and Maksim Metreveli, and third place was taken by Mairon Moisto – Trent Asso Tõnisson. The first day ended with a 9-round bridge tournament. First place was taken by Kirke Koni – Karl-Mattias Moor, Markus Ikla – Ardi Raag and Mart Narva-Sander Piig. Today's second day began with a gomoku tournament (time control 10min 3 sec). Timo Ilu-Margus Tuvikene won with 13 points, ahead of Kuno Kolk – Georg-Romet Topkin by 1.5 and Brenet Rahumägi - Kristofer Lõhmus, who came in third, by as much as 3.5 points. The checkers tournament, held with the same time control, was the most evenly matched. Ilu Tuvikene managed to grab first place with 10.5 points, while Kuusk-Salula and Ikla-Raag were half a point behind. Overall, Kuusk-Salula won with 142 points. Ikla-Raag secured second place and the title of best youth pair with 129 points, and Hõbemägi-Purk came in third with 122 points. Ilu-Tuvikene, who came in fourth, lost to them by only 0.5 points. It was interesting that Ilu and Tuvikene only received points from four areas. Namely, Timo did not participate in the bridge, celebrating his son's birthday, while Margus, a strong bridge player, competed outside the official competition with his daughter, who was playing for the first time. The best female pair this year was Ingel Laur – Tuuli Tiivel with 74 points.
