Sound notifications in board games

User Andrey12 wrote to us with the idea of adding sound notifications to board games. And this, for example, after an opponent's move or after answering a challenge. In this case, you would not have to constantly monitor the game board while your opponent is thinking, but you could also move around in other game rooms/forums and come back to make your move when you hear a sound notification. The idea is very good and completely doable. What do other users think about it and what could be the events that could trigger a sound notification? And of course, the user would also have the option to turn off this functionality.

I would be all for it. Since I constantly have a game open on the sidelines of work, it would be great to know what your opponent is doing even when you're not looking at the window!

I would suggest two different sound signals: 1) Invitation and private message sound signal: Private messages here mean chat room messages that are intended just for you. Invitation messages mean three possible events: a) When you are invited to play b) When your invitation is answered negatively c) When your invitation is answered positively (the game starts) For such events, one sound signal would sound. This setting could be set in the main window of the board game room (for example, there could be a checkbox under the chat room window). By default, this sound signal would be on. 2) Move sound signal. The sound signal will sound when the opponent has made a move or when you are watching the game and one of the players has made a move. This setting should be set on a game-by-game basis (for example, I play and watch games at the same time - I want a sound signal to sound for my opponent's moves in my game, but not for the games I am watching). The device could then be turned on from the checkbox below the game board (next to the "Surrender" and "Offer a Draw" buttons). By default, this sound signal would be turned off. Here are a few questions: 1) Should a sound signal also sound when a message arrives in the game chat room? 2) For which other events should a sound signal sound? 3) Should such settings create a new window that would pop up when you click the "Settings" button? I would like to receive feedback and some links to sound files that could then be used. The sound files could be a little more distinguishable.

I would suggest two sounds: Sound No. 1 and Sound No. 2 . I would also suggest a few events for which the user interface could make a sound: 1) There are 30 seconds left in the turn time 2) You are offered a draw 3) Your draw offer was answered negatively 4) The game ends I am waiting for feedback and good ideas :)!

The sounds are nice. I think there's no need to overdo it with these sounds right away. Looking at the game, there's probably no need for sounds. This is because if you're watching, for example, two or even three games at a time, there's a constant "ringing" going on and there wouldn't be much point in it. I would limit the sounds to this for now: 1) When the opponent moves 2) When calling to play 3) There is a certain amount of time until the end of the turn (if 30 seconds, then in games with 30-second turn times this doesn't sound?!) If there were more sounds, maybe this ringing would get out of hand and therefore maybe I would leave out other options for now?

I would like to suggest an idea that if I have turned on the sound in one game - then when I start a new game right after that, that sound would remain on by default, instead of having to check the box again every time.

In fact, you could beep for the last 3-5 seconds... if you're too busy, you'd at least have time to make an emergency move.

Let me bring up this old topic again:

Is this gear sound still necessary?

Tournament games must not have a sound warning of an imminent timeout. Chess clocks must also have this function turned off in tabletop tournaments.

Maybe it would be wise to make this sound less annoying. Some other sound, for example. And then would it be possible to link it to a profile. Those who want it can use it, those who don't want it can't.

Real tournaments don't really have this sound, but why shouldn't it be different on a computer? Does it have to be like a real tournament? Real tournaments don't have this sound, simply because chess clocks don't have this sound built in.
Perhaps more knowledgeable people could comment.

PS I deleted the previous post because it was completely off topic. You could write relevant comments under the correct topic.
